It’s never stated in the episode and I hope they clear that up quickly in episode 2. On the other, we have no idea what the Blue Mermaids are actually protecting anyone from. Japan has sank underwater but now has futuristic floating cities. the Blue Mermaids are basically the Coast Guard of this world and 2. On the one hand, we can easily infer from the episode and reading the synopsis that 1. I don’t know if this is a good example of “show don’t tell” or not. From reading the plot synopsis, this means they want to join the presumably all female navy of this future Japan that has sunk underwater. I’m not quite as convinced from just the first episode, though I’m open to that interpretation if that’s how it turns out.Īnyway, at the start of the episode we’re introduced to Mike (who I will constantly make fun of for having an English, male name) and her best friend Moka who want to become Blue Mermaids.

That is to say that the slice of life stuff is just to draw in the kinds of viewers who are there for a “cute girls doing cute things (on boats)” anime and the real meat of the series will be drama on the high seas. On the one hand, about 80% of the episode is your typical bland moe slice of life stuff in a futuristic/alternate reality setting (and on boats). I’m not quite sure what to make of Haifuri from the first episode.
